Wine allergies are sensitivities to wine that cause common side effects — including headaches, skin flush, congestion, runny nose/sneezing, stomach distress and hangovers. These allergic reactions are very similar to those experienced from more familiar allergies, triggered by certain foods like shellfish, or pollen, dust or pet dander .
Wine allergies are caused by your body’s reactions to histamines and sulfites. Both histamines and sulfites are naturally occurring in wine; sulfites are also added in all wines as a preservative, to prevent oxidation.
Histamines (a kind of biogenic amine) are chemicals made by our immune systems. They are also found in many foods and beverages. The histamines in our bodies provide important benefits such as fighting infections or regulating sleep. The histamines found in foods and beverages are very common. Histamines are especially prevalent in food/drink that is aged or fermented, such as cured meats, aged cheeses or fermented beer, ale and wine; histamines are also in common items such as mustard and ketchup, peppers or shellfish. These consumable histamines combine with the histamines produced in our bodies and can trigger allergic responses in many.
Some people have more sensitivity to histamines than other people do. Because histamines are in the things we eat and drink, and are part of our genetic make-up as well, it is difficult to quantify how many people are sensitive to histamines in wine — but the allergic reactions are unmistakable to the sufferer.
In the case of wine, there are histamine precursors found in the skin of grapes. The histamines are then formed when wine grapes are fermented.
As a rule of thumb, the thicker the skin of a wine grape – including varietals such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah, sangiovese or tempranillo – the more likely people with histamine sensitivity will experience wine allergies.
The Wand™ and The Wave™ are the first products available that remove the four kinds of histamines found in wine that cause allergic reactions. We hold a range of patents based on selectively removing these histamines and sulfites from wine without altering any of the remaining components of wine (tannins, antioxidants, etc.) that give wine its characteristic taste, aroma and color.
Sulfites are preservatives that are universally added to wine to preserve it in the bottle. Sulfites also occur naturally in wine, in smaller amounts. When you open a bottle of wine, or pour a glass of wine, the sulfites are no longer needed to prevent wine from oxidizing.
The U.S. and the E.U. both require wine labels to state “this wine contains sulfites.” Most wines contain between 10 – 200 Parts Per Million (PPM) of sulfites. You may see wines that call themselves “organic” or say “low sulfites,” but all wines do, in fact, contain sulfites; no wine could go from bottle to table without them.
Sulfite sensitivities are less prevalent than histamine sensitivities, but yield many of the same symptoms. PureWine removes the sulfites once they have done their job to keep wine from going bad during the journey from the winemaker to your table.
Men and women, young and old, all suffer from wine allergies. Side effects from wine allergies often appear for the first time, or increase in impact, among women during and after menopause, due to changing hormones that affect the immune system.
There is also a genetic predisposition towards wine allergies. If your ancestors came from a part of the world such as Northern Europe or East/South Asia that did not consume products made from fermented grapes, it’s quite likely that they did not build up the same immunities that people from grape-consuming regions like the Mediterranean did. Your heritage is not an automatic determinant of whether or not you have a wine allergy, but it is a contributing factor.
Wine allergies also reflect our own individual diets, what we eat and drink from a young age and how those habits affect our individual “microbiome,” and its effect on our immune system. Avoiding processed foods and the kinds of histamine-rich foods such as cured/aged meats and cheeses and other problematic items does reduce the likelihood of wine allergies.
Finally, wine allergies can also be triggered by interactions with certain kinds of drugs, especially sulfa or sulfonamide drugs, including many anti-diabetic agents and diuretics. Please consult your physician if you are taking any kind of prescription drug and wish to understand about possible side effects.
Wine is filtered several times during the winemaking process, before it goes in the bottle. Wine filtration is used to remove grape skins, pulp and stems so it is “clear,” i.e., there are no visible particles, and also to remove certain compounds, e.g., excess tannins.
Many people use wine filters at home to remove any remaining particles that are still in the bottle. These filters work simply to trap particles so they do not emerge when pouring wine into a glass or decanter. Part of the function of The Wave™, our bottle solution, is to remove particles that you can see.
Yet The Wave™ and The Wand™ both do so much more, by filtering what you can’t see – the histamines and sulfites that are in wine and that trigger wine allergies.
And PureWine filtration does nothing to affect taste, aroma or color. In blind tests, even wine experts express a preference for wine filtered by PureWine technology, because it allows the natural characteristics of wine to be experienced more intensely. PureWine filtration really brings out the best in wine.
Wine has a complicated relationship with oxygen. When wine is exposed to oxygen, the wine evolves, as the tannins (which make wine dry and astringent, but wonderfully complex) soften and the aroma and color flourish. Yet wine ages quickly when exposed to oxygen, and can then turn bad. We have all experienced the bottle of wine that quickly becomes bitter and undrinkable if left opened for too long.
The Wave™ aerates wine by managing the effect of oxygen, to bring out the intensity and structure of wine. The Wand™, our by-the-glass solution, has the same filtration effect on wine as The Wave™ and quickly aerates wine during the stirring process.
No. PureWine products do not alter in anyway the distinctive flavor compounds and unique “terroir” (a French term to describe the soil, climate, weather, etc. that is unique to every vineyard and area where grapes are grown) that give wine its unique taste, aroma and color.
The Wave™ and The Wand™ work on all red and white wines. The Wand™ also works with rosé wines and sparkling wine, such as champagne or prosecco, but the stirring action may cause them to lose their effervescence more quickly if used beyond the recommended 3-8 minutes.
The Wave™ and The Wand™ have been thoroughly tested for efficacy in alleviating the side effects from wine allergies – and for safety — by a leading, independent laboratory.
Further, our patented NanoPore™ absorption technology is proven to selectively filter histamines and sulfites without changing the taste, aroma or color of wine. The Phoenix™ restoration technology is proven to remove the bitter, acidic and oxidized components of already opened wine, bringing it back to its best and natural state: pure wine.
The many thousands of testimonials from our customers tell our story better than we can ourselves. Read these testimonials and success stories here.
Both The Wave™ and The Wand™ are single-use products. One Wave will filter and aerate an entire bottle of wine. One Wand will filter a single 6-ounce glass of wine. This usage will ensure the most effective removal of histamines and sulfites. Effectiveness can be significantly decreased if The Wave is used for more than one bottle, or if a Wand is used for more than one glass of wine.
The patented filtration technology in both The Wave™ and The Wand™ works without adding chemicals to your wine, making the products safe, reliable and effective. The filters in The Wave™ and The Wand™ have been tested according to FDA standards, and are manufactured with food-grade-quality, BPA-free components.
The Wave™ is made of bio-renewable plastic and can be recycled once you have removed the filter that is inside the top housing. Just gently pry the housing apart to remove the filter. The housing and stem and air tube go in the recycling and the filter goes in the trash.
The handles of The Wand™ are made from BPA-free polypropylene plastic and are 100% recyclable; just remove the filter from the handle and place the handle in the recycling. The contents of the filter are not recyclable – they are resin beads that contain the absorbed histamines and sulfites – but you can dispose of the filter safely in the trash.
If you purchased The Wave™ or The Wand™ at a retail store, please return the product to the store and they will refund your money.
If you purchased the product online, please return it to us at PureWine Inc., P.O. Box 100, Grapevine, TX 76099 and we will refund you for the purchase price and for postage.
The top housing, stem and air tube of The Wave™, as well as the handle of The Wand™, are made from BPA-free, food-grade plastics. The filters contain absorbent beads made from nano-pore™ resins that absorb histamines and sulfites without releasing any chemicals. Nothing goes into the wine when it is filtered.
