Antioxidants in Wine: Good News for Wine Lovers

Antioxidants in Wine: Good News for Wine Lovers

If you love wine as much as I do, you probably already know that wine is good for your health. I like to remind myself and others of this fun fact when I order a second glass! Last weekend, a friend asked me why wine was healthy and I felt a little silly because I couldn’t explain it. I thought it was high time I did a little digging so that I could back-up my happy hour claims.

Researchers in the medical community have conducted plenty of studies that find that moderate wine consumption can lengthen your life. Key contributors to these health benefits are the poly-phenolic flavonoids in wine, also known as antioxidants.

Pick-up a health magazine or watch morning television and you will notice that health experts love to talk about the benefits of antioxidants in your diet. Why? Because antioxidants neutralize harmful free radicals in your body. Free radicals are problematic and responsible for so many awful health conditions. These unsafe free radicals are all around us in daily living, including exposure to pollution, chemicals, pesticides and even processed and fast food.

In wine, these antioxidants are found in grapes and grape skins. In fact, red wine has more antioxidants than white because grape skins (which are highly concentrated with antioxidants) are included in the fermentation of red wines.

After chatting with my doctor and doing a little online research of my own, I’m happy to provide you with several actual reasons why moderate red wine consumption may add years to your life.

  1. Heart Protection One of the powerful antioxidants found in red wine is called resveratrol. In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, scientists at the University of Ulm, Germany, investigated the biological behaviors of resveratrol in the human body. Resveratrol has been shown to offer potent protection against cardiovascular disease.
  2. Your Brain Antioxidants in wine are linked to improved brain function, which may lower the risk of developing degenerative brain conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
  3. Good Cholesterol Red wine in moderation raises your HDL cholesterol, which is a really good thing for your heart and the rest of your body.
  4. Healthier Cells Healthy cells decrease the effects of aging and increase your lifespan! And if that’s not enough, they make you look younger and feel better.
  5. Cancer Treatment The antioxidant resveratrol might make chemotherapy and radiation treatments more effective for cancer patients. When used in combination with radiation, resveratrol can help kill cancerous cells.

While red wine is great for us, the histamines in wine still cause crummy side effects for me, including nasal congestion and a scratchy throat. Several of my friends have complained about headaches, skin flushing and stomach issues. These are no longer a problem with The Wand. It selectively absorbs the histamines in wine just before I drink it. Order some here today.

A glass of red wine hits the spot some days, and it packs so many health benefits! Drink it in moderation…and savor every sip!
